Book cover: The Cartographic Mind — who drew your map? A forthcoming volume from decision cartographic
the book

the cartographic mind.

available soon

Our forthcoming volume on the discipline behind the practice: why the consequential act in any decision is the framing — the map you draw before you choose — and a ten-part method for drawing it well.

the argument

the decision is the map.

Most decisions don't fail from bad judgment. They fail from bad maps — from a frame that fixed the wrong alternatives before anyone began to choose. The Cartographic Mind makes the case that framing is the real decision, and that the discipline for doing it well already exists. It's cartography.

Drawing on three thousand years of mapmaking — from a Babylonian clay tablet to John Snow's cholera map to Beck's diagram of the Underground — the book recasts the cartographer's craft as a method for decision-making. Its promise is not better luck. It is better decisions: ones you can defend, audit, learn from, and improve on.

before every choice there is a map, someone drew it, and the drawing — not the choosing — is where the power lives.
